Nauvoo, Illinois Temple
Built and dedicated in 2002, this Temple is a near-identical replica of the original built on the same spot in the 1840's by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the city they built after draining unwanted swampland on the banks of the Mississippi River. Completed in 1846 through tremendous sacrifice of time and material means, this building was the largest on the Mississippi River north of St. Louis at the time of its construction. It was destroyed by an arsonist in 1848 and further damaged by a tornado in 1850. The rebuilt Temple was dedicated on June 27, 2002, the 158th anniversary of the death of Joseph & Hyrum Smith.
